How to finish road bike bar tape without electrical tape

The last centimetre of a bar wrap is the only part of a road bike still finished with a strip of electrical tape. It is the cheapest thing on the bike, and it is usually the first thing to look old. Here is why it fails, what the alternatives are, and how to finish bar tape with a clamp instead.

Why electrical tape wrinkles and peels

Electrical tape is a stretchy vinyl strip with a soft adhesive. To hold a wrap end down you have to pull it tight and wind it on under tension, and from that moment the tape is trying to shrink back to its original length. The edge lifts. The exposed glue picks up a grey line of road dust. Your hand rolls over that ridge every time you move on the tops, which loosens it further.

Then it gets wet. Warm hands, rain and a season of sweat all attack the adhesive, and once the end lets go, the wrap under it starts to unwind. Nothing you do at the workbench changes this. The material is simply wrong for the job it has been given.

The usual ways to finish bar tape

There are three common answers, and they are not equally good.

The finishing tape in the box. Most tape sets include a short strip of matching adhesive tape. It looks better than black electrical tape for about a week, then it behaves the same way, because it is the same idea in a nicer colour.

Self fusing silicone tape. This one bonds to itself rather than to the bar, so there is no exposed glue edge and it survives rain far better. It is a real improvement. The catch is thickness: it builds a soft ridge under your hand, and cutting the end so it looks straight is fiddly.

A rigid clamp. Instead of sticking the end down, you trap it. A stiff ring goes around the bar over the end of the wrap and holds it mechanically. Nothing is under tension, nothing is sticky, and the finish line is straight because the part is straight.

How a rigid clamp works

The clamp is a stiff ring sized to the bar. The end of the tape is tucked under it, and the ring presses that end flat against the bar all the way around. The holding force comes from the shape of the part, not from adhesive, so it does not relax over time, it does not collect a dust line, and rain makes no difference to it. When you re-wrap the bars, it comes off and goes straight back on.

That is what the Wrap Clamp is: a rigid ring that ends the wrap in one clean line, the same on both sides. It is shaped for road drop bars and routes over the brake hose, so it sits flush under the hood instead of standing proud of it.

Check the bar first: 23.8 mm

Drop bars are two diameters. The clamp area next to the stem is 31.8 mm on almost every modern bar, and the tops where your hands sit are 23.8 mm. A tape end clamp sits on the 23.8 mm section, so that is the number to check with a caliper before you order anything.

The second thing to check is what runs under your tape. A brake hose routed over the bar is fine. A mechanical shift cable needs a different version of the part, which is not out yet. Every fit note for every part we make is on the fit guide.

Finishing the last wraps

If your tape is already on the bar, you do not need to strip it. Work on the last few turns only.

Unwind the end of the tape until the last turns are loose and the bar is bare where the clamp will sit. Slide the clamp onto the bar and leave it loose, roughly where you want the wrap to end. Now wrap those last turns back on the way you like them, keeping the tension even, and cut or fold the end square so nothing sticks out sideways.

Tuck that squared end under the clamp. Slide the clamp along to its final position, so the line it makes is where you want the wrap to stop, and press it home against the bar. Do the same on the other side, then step back and look at the bike from the front: both clamps should end at the same distance from the stem. That is the whole job, and it is the same job every time you re-wrap.
